Why Build A Water Feature or Koi Pond

Night Pond2

Let me start by saying that over the years I have had many friends, family and customers that have seen my koi ponds.  The first things I tend to hear from them is that they love the landscape but building a pond must cost a lot.  In the grand scope of landscaping your outdoor living space a pond is one of the lower cost landscapes you can put in and that you can do on your own.

If you look at pond landscaping overall verses the grass that you maintain now, a water feature will most likely cost you less to maintain over time.  If you have grass you know all about mowing, fertilizing, watering, weeding, and if you get put under a water restriction it starts to die and then you don’t want to see it or show it off to your friends.

With a water feature or koi pond you can design it to be as much work as you would like.  Even with 7,000 gallons worth of Koi ponds in my back yard, I still only need to really work on it once a week in the summer and even less in the winter.  I do still feed my koi every day in the warmer months but I don’t count that as work being I do it while drinking coffee in the morning.

The Impact on Your Outdoor Space

Having a pond in your yard will bring excitement and character. Most ponds have a waterfall or stream that help bring a new calming sound to the landscape. That element becomes the focal point for everyone who enters the yard.  The pond will transform itself, changing with the seasons as the plants around it start to grow!  The sounds of the water and nature will help drown out undesired background noise. If you can have it close to your bedroom window you’ll be asleep in no time.

Create a New Lifestyle

Do you spend a lot of time just mowing your yard again and again?  Transforming that grass into an exciting ecosystem will completely change your mind about relaxing outside.  An ecosystem will draw you into it with new sites and sounds.  It will create a lifestyle for you that you never knew existed. Whether it’s tinkering around in your pond or just enjoying its scenery, it will give you a reason to be outside.  You will wake up in the morning grab your cup of coffee and go see the pond and in the evening having dinner by the pond is a great way to unwind from the day.

Bring Nature Into Your Yard

Having a pond will bring nature up close and personal as the wildlife finds the new watering hole in the yard. Soon you may find that the frogs and dragonflies will too, and different colored birds will splash in the waters for their baths. Bring in Koi and get mesmerized as they swim back and forth eating from your hand.  As every pond is different so will the nature be from pond to pond.

Introducing a New Learning Tool For You and Your Children

If you have children or grand children once they find the Koi pond they will be enthralled with just watching the wildlife and fish. Most kids today can’t find a reason to get off the couch and get outside but with a pond in the yard to entertain them you will be amazed.  It will give them a reason to be outside with endless exploration.  They will learn all about ecosystems and nature, bringing back to you the stories and photographs of plants and animals they find.  They’ll talk about it, tell their friends, and even base their school projects on some of the things the pond has to offer.  Their appreciation for nature will grow and the lifestyle will be created for them as well as you.
